On Dec. 6, we lost members of our Rebel family - My deepest condolences go out to the victims of Wednesday's incident, along with their families and friends who have suffered this unimaginable loss. Our UNLV Community and Rebel Family have been shocked by a senseless criminal act. The collective response and the actions of our initially responding officers no doubt saved lives. The initial call was received by University Police Dispatch at 11:44 a.m. and the first officer was on scene within 78 seconds. Additional arriving units from Metro and UPD then entered Beam Hall, and two University Police detectives confronted the suspect and engaged in a gun battle which neutralized the threat. These two detectives are heroes who risked their lives in order to save countless others, in what could have been a worse tragedy.
I want to thank Sheriff McMahill and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, along with all of our other regional partners who came to our aid without hesitation, including Henderson Police Department, Clark County School District Police, Boulder City Police Department, North Las Vegas Police Department, Clark County Fire Department, and all of the emergency medical professionals as well as our federal law enforcement partners at the Marshals Service, FBI, ATF, and the DEA.
We as a law enforcement community stand together, not only during Wednesday's tragedy, but today and always in working together to create a safer future for UNLV and the Nevada System of Higher Education. While we navigate this difficult period, we will unite to support one another, honoring the memory of those that we lost, and create that rebel strong spirit that is UNLV.
